Dan Schultz Materials List


Easel:

  • Bring a portable easel of some type (French easel, pochade box, etc).

Canvas: 

  • Bring 6-8 canvas panels, any sizes between 8”x10” and 12”x16”.

Brushes: 

You can purchase Dan’s brush set from Trekell or use brushes similar to:

  • Hog Bristle Flats, sizes #2, #4, #6, #8. Dan uses Trekell Hog Bristle Long Flats, series 400LF.
  • Synthetic Mongoose Flats, sizes 1/8”, 1/4”, 3/8”. Dan uses Trekell Legion Long Grainer, series 9099L.

Paint (Oil):

Bring colors that are as close as possible to the six listed below. Dan recommends M. Graham & Co. oil colors, but other brands are ok.

  • Titanium White 
  • Bismuth Yellow (or Cadmium Lemon)
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Anthraquinone Red (or Permanent Alizarin Crimson)
  • Viridian (Each student will receive a free tube of Viridian from M. Graham & Co.)
  • Ultramarine Blue

The following colors are optional, but Dan might use some of them:

  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Cadmium Orange
  • Cadmium Red
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Ivory Black 

Miscellaneous:

  • Odorless mineral spirits (Gamsol or Turpenoid).
  • Brush washing container
  • Palette for mixing paint
  • Palette knife for cleaning palette
  • Paper towels
  • Trash bag for used paper towels
  • Small sketchpad and pencil
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Drinking Water
  • Camera
  • (Optional) Umbrella Kit from Easy-L
  • (Optional) RayMar wet panel carrier for safely carrying your wet paintings

Recommended Supply Brands:

  • M. Graham & Co. oil paints (made with walnut oil that doesn’t yellow over time like linseed oil)
  • SourceTek linen canvas panels
  • RayMar linen canvas panels and wet panel carriers
  • Trekell brushes, palette knives, linen canvas panels
