This in-studio workshop will focus on how we can get a figure or landscape painting to work for us. We will talk about how to see possibilities and concepts for a painting to be able to see more “abstract”—in other words—to not see a mountain, forest, stream, clouds, as they literally are, but to see things as an interesting and compelling arrangement of shapes and colors. This opens us up to seeing more as an “artist” and seeing the unlimited possibilities for a painting. I believe that this kind of thinking also helps us find our own voice as it is more of a personal viewpoint as opposed to a literal viewpoint.

We will start out with smaller value and color studies to warm up and enable you to grasp this more designed based method. We will also talk about what we leave out as much as what we may add. We will talk about shape, value and color relationships.

Bring some of your favorite photos to work from and I will have a large assortment of great figure and landscape photos that I have accumulated over my 50 years of travel all over the world. I will give demonstrations and individual critiques to guide the student at the level they are at; so you are not overwhelmed by the whole process. Bring a sense of humor and we will work hard and have a good time doing it!
