Sunday, July 13, 2014 — In conjunction with our call-for-entry exhibit and month-long celebration The Heart of Steinbeck CountryCarmel Visual Arts, with cooperation of the Museum of Monterey and the California Art Club, is hosting a “Quick-draw” paint-out / sculpt-out on Sunday, July 13th, 2014.  Come to the beautiful Monterey harbor waterfront to paint scenes made famous in the John Steinbeck novels “Cannery Row” and its sequel “Sweet Thursday.” The books are set along Ocean View Avenue where Ed (Doc) Ricketts’ lab was located and characters Mack and the boys wandered the streets. Renamed Cannery Row in 1958, the avenue continues until you get to the Coast Guard Pier, and Old Fisherman’s wharf is only 1/2 a mile north. There continues to be an active fishing community and marina, with additional seafood restaurants and gift stores, there are plenty of opportunities to set your creative spirit free.

  • Collectors: No registration required. Come watch the fun anytime throughout the morning. Begin purchasing fresh wet-canvases at 2pm. Sale ends at 5pm.
  • Artists: Start by registering at the Museum of Monterey which is located at the mouth of the Old Fisherman’s wharf.
  • Registration will be from 8am until 10am.

For those submitting for art sale and awards:

  • All paintings must be finished and delivered to registration table at 1pm.
  • At the end of the allotted time, each artist will deliver one finished painting (unframed) to the registration table for display.
  • Free art exhibit and sale of all displayed artwork will continue from 2pm to 5pm.
  • SALES: Carmel Visual Arts will collect all payments for artwork sold.
    Commission: 60% to artist. 40% to Carmel Visual Arts.
  • All unsold artwork will be picked up by artist after 5pm.
